We’re the place for competitive and recreational running at Brown University! Whether you’re an undergrad, grad student, or faculty member, we encourage you to join us for a run. We welcome runners of all levels! For those interested in running competitively, we compete in XC races, indoor and outdoor track meets, and road races. If you want to check us out, stop by a run! How do I join?

When/where is practice?

Both the recreational and competitive teams meet at the Bear Statue outside of the Nelson Fitness Center at 5:45pm Mon, 4:15 pm Tues-Fri, and 10 am on weekends. Arrive early to get some extra stretching in. Practices take anywhere from one to two hours. Check the schedule for time changes or cancellations.

What’s the time commitment like?

Your level of time commitment is totally up to you, whether you come once a week or seven times a week. Also, all of our races this term are within a few hours drive, making racing a short day trip. Everyone is welcome to race as much or as little as they desire!

What should I expect?

The running club leads multiple runs at different paces and distances. We usually follow a run from our popular runs page, but sometimes we explore other areas of Providence or play frisbee or soccer instead. Check out our gallery to see the fun events we’ve done in the past.

For the competitive team, a typical week of practices usually consists of one or two workouts, three or four steady runs, and one long run (typically held on Saturday or Sunday). The workouts are designed for all levels of runners and are held on the indoor track, outdoor track, or the roads depending on the workout type and the weather. Training runs range from four to eight miles at various paces depending on skill level. All runs are concluded with a good round of stretching.

Do I need prior running experience?

A background in running is not required for the recreational running club. Many members went for their first run ever with our club! We won’t leave you behind 🙂

For the competitive team, prior racing experience is not required, but a background in running is recommended. We do not hold tryouts, but you should be able to run three to four miles without stopping. If you are getting back in shape after a long break, you are welcome to run with the recreational team until you are prepared for the competitive team workouts.

Where and how far do you run?

We run all over the city, and our favorite places include the waterfront by India Point Park, Blackstone Boulevard, and the East Bay Bike Path. Check out our popular runs page to view maps of our favorite routes.

What is the competitive team?

The competetive team, also referred to as the club xc/track team, is the branch of the Brown Running Club for runners dedicated to racing in meets. We compete in many nearby cross country and track meets throughout the year, usually coordinated by the National Intercollegiate Running Club Association (NIRCA), as well as races hosted by other running clubs or track teams. To compete on the competitive team, you must register through the club sports website. If you plan to complete in at least one race this semester, you must also pay our membership dues ($45/year or $25/semester). Dues can be paid through Venmo (@BrownRunningClub)

What if I sign up for a race but cannot attend?

Any runner that retracts from a race after the registration deadline must repay the registration fee and transportation costs for that race. This can be paid through Venmo (@BrownRunningClub)

How do you log your runs?

Many of our runners use a GPS watch, such as a Garmin, to track their running. Some runners upload their runs to Strava, a running based social media site where you can follow and support other runners. Be sure to join the Brown Running Club page.
