Track Preview
Our indoor track season is underway, and already we have had many impressive performances. In the few meets the club has competed at so far, six new club records have been set! Adam Janik set the record for both the men’s mile and 5000m. First-year Eliot Laidlaw set the record in the men’s 3000m. Maura Driscoll, another first-year, set two records in the women’s mile and 3000m. The team of Eliot Laidlaw, Matt Vigilante, Max Heller, and Andrés Beltran set the club record for the men’s 4x800m relay. We look forward to many more broken records this season, both in indoor and outdoor track. See our schedule for a list of upcoming meets!

Billy Brockmueller Invitational
Upcoming on Saturday, February 23rd is our Billy Brockmueller Invitational meet at the Brown indoor track. This meet is open to runners of all ages, and we’re looking forward to high school, college, and masters athletes coming together for an exciting day of races. This meet is named for our former teammate Billy Brockmueller, who passed away this year following a skiing accident. Billy was an outstanding runner and teammate, and in his honor, we are raising money for Simba Ministries. Simba’s mission is to promote education, health, and wellness for Kenyan youth through mission trips for college students. The organization offers education, medical, and athletic themed sponsorship for students to share their skills in Kenyan communities. In college, Billy participated in two mission trips to Kenya through the organization, in which he taught math at a school and led the construction project of a running track where young students now have a place to train and compete.

Treadmills: The Great Debate
A popular (and often heated) debate on the Brown Running Club is the comparison between training on treadmills or on roads. This topic is so widely debated on our team that we have decided to compile the arguments for both the support and opposition of the treadmill.

We work hard to provide great training and racing opportunities for everyone, and we also want the club to be as accessible as possible to runners from all sorts of financial situations, so we try as hard as we can to keep costs and dues low for members. A significant portion of our funding comes through fundraising and membership dues, but this is generally not enough to cover our annual expenses. This is why we kindly ask for donations from friends and family of the Brown Running Club. These donations are always greatly appreciated, and you can be assured that all of the funds are directly supporting your athlete and their teammates.

Happy Running!
